What we love the most about up-and-coming festivals is their tendency to spotlight the underground and their ambition to create a community-first environment. One multi-day event that does just that is Fire Lights Music Festival in upstate New York.
Beginning in 2021, right when the live events scene was rebounding from the pandemic, Fire Lights launched their independent festival with a lineup of no more than 50 acts. With names like Mersiv, Manic Focus, and Tripp St., Fire Lights 2021 had some appeal, but it wasn’t quite a festival that could attract a national audience.
Year after year, Andrew Lehr and the SONICFLO team optimized what he thought would make the festival better. From improved infrastructure and tighter planning to bigger production and larger lineups, Fire Lights has now grown into an occasion with nearly 100 acts that fans across the country are dying to check out.
Today, we find Lehr and SONICFLO on the precipice of their most ambitious year to date.
Headlining the festival we have Truth, Sunsquabi, Dessert Dwellers, and Supertask, the latter of which will be playing two sets (one downtempo). As we move down the lineup, a few River Beats’ favorites that will be gracing one of four stages at Fire Lights this year include Smigonaut, KEOTA, Entangled Mind, Humandala, and Gunnar Nash. Keep an eye out for our artists-to-watch list coming out at the beginning of July!
As for some of the more novelty acts on the lineup, we’ve got Gantzer Does Pink Floyd; featuring members of Aqueous, Twiddle, Moe., and Tortoise Forest, Come Back to Earth; a Mac Miller Live Band tribute, and an earth Hz secret set which will feature a takeover from the festival’s adjacent record label – earth Hz.
This last element is yet another spectacle that makes Fire Lights stand out. Launched just a month ago (May 2024) with a compilation album featuring names like sfam, Comisar, and BackLeft, earth Hz is already showing mad love for the underground bass realm.
Aside from the music, attendees can enjoy fire performances, workshops, activities, yoga, meditation, arts & crafts, ice baths, art installations, and plenty of local food and craft vendors.
As for the destination, Fire Lights is located in a beautiful area in upstate New York (Sherman) that is 25 miles from Erie Airport and 90 miles from Cleveland, Buffalo, and Pittsburgh airports. The site is just far enough to get away from the smog of the city and really feel like an adventure without being too much of a trek. It won’t take you long after you get to The Heron to really start feeling the magic of the natural landscapes that surround you. Plenty of green, shaded spots to escape the sun, and places to explore.
