The Gradient Perspective is a thriving independent record label that has been home to a variety of incredible electronic artists for years. Based out of Washington, D.C., TGP has provided these artists with a place to shine and showcase their talents, whether it be through music releases, festival stage takeovers, or one-off shows.
I’ve been fortunate to attend several shows hosted by TGP over the years, and every one of them has knocked it out of the park. Their diverse lineup of talent highlights their commitment to supporting artists who bring something a little different to the table, from the stirring string stylings of Josh Teed and Phyphr to the harder kicks of STARFOX and Beat Kitty.
The most recent offering from the Gradient Perspective is a 20-track album from a wide range of artists, dubbed Electro Soul, Broken Beat, Soul Hop Compilation. Every song features a different artist (or collaborations between artists) and their individual sounds, but it all ties together masterfully to create a cohesive and well-flowing LP. The roster includes musicians such as Michal Menert, Homemade Spaceship, Wax Future, TheBusiness., and many more, as seen below.
While every track here is worth a listen, there are a handful that stuck out to me as personal favorites. “Denial” by DrewBeats is a beautiful, heartfelt number that feels like soaring through clouds before taking a turn into grimier bass. “Don’t Know Why” by Soul.Method and analog cymatics also caught my attention with its groovy rhythm, which set up the next track perfectly. Lastly, “The Big Heavy” by Shuj Roswell is one I’ll be bumping for some time to come–the electro-funk vibes are uplifting and pure fun.
Since there are too many songs on this album to dive into the nitty-gritty of each one, we strongly recommend checking out the full listing for yourself. You can explore genres ranging from hip-hop to breakbeat and more, and every track is a lovely reflection of the artist(s) who wrote it as well as a peek into their larger discographies.
Our intention with this compilation was to bring together artists who are known for expressing themselves with their music, who can convey emotion from the first note to the last, and to weave it into one cohesive piece. We’re so so so excited to share that with you today.
