Dewpoint, also known as Anthony Douglas from East Tennessee, is an up-and-coming producer and audiovisual artist with a story to share. This eclectic sound designer has created a brand-new six-track LP, Bloom, as his first major project of the year. However, he isn’t just dropping new tunes–he has also written an accompanying story that runs parallel alongside the audio experience.
For those not familiar with Dewpoint, he’s a multi-faceted artist who pulls from a blend of genres like hip hop, garage, and DNB. He’s performed live alongside artists like Alejo and Ternion Sound and although he hasn’t been on the scene long, his project is advancing rapidly.
Bloom is a sonic journey that takes listeners through a range of tempos, beats, and emotions starting with the first track, “Breather.” The story begins with a slow, ethereal buildup that quickly drops into a grimier breakbeat sound reminiscent of G Jones‘ older stylings.
As I awoke I found myself lying peacefully in grassy plains. Someone was there with me, the Guide.
“Where am I?”
“We’re in Arcord. How did you get here?”
“No idea.”
We would later go through four trials together: Rising in Aurora Cave, Remembrance at the Volcanos, Change during the Frost, and Returning Home from the Mystery Islands.
Next on the project is “Rising,” first released on Soundz Organic. This track picks up the pace while still maintaining an otherworldly feel, which emanates through melancholy wind chimes before quickly shifting gears into a funky squelching bassline.
We gained great insight in Aurora Cave, nestled underneath the Waterfall. We were urged by an Angel to find the dragon Zenerith, to help him return Home. We’ll make the journey with a renewed spirit.
“Acid Glass” pays homage to the more experimental side of bass music with clear influences from artists like Tipper and The Widdler. The song throws down some serious heat, kicking in some spookier vibes to perfectly match the energy of the ‘deadly swamp’ written about in the story.
After the trial, the Lead and their Guide find themselves where they started: the plains in front of the Waterfall which hides Aurora Cave. A haunting circular portal opens before them as the lake starts looking and feeling more like a deadly swamp…
With “Frost,” Dewpoint invites listeners into the next portion of his tale: a desolate winter landscape. An eerie melody permeates throughout the track, which also features a surprisingly heavy beat that is sure to hit on a live sound system.
The next portal took us to a volcanic environment, left desolate after generations of war. Is this the future? Or the past? Or neither?
The volcano stopped, and the environment suddenly began to change. The sky and smoke cleared, trees and flowers and plants grew… And snow began to fall.
In the time that the air cooled and the lava solidified, everything became chilled and then freezing.
The second trial was seeing consequence, and the third, the passing of time and Change.
Even as the LP winds down, “Afire” keeps things blazing steadily with snare lines, deeper wubs, and a feeling of anticipation building into the final track. The overall fantasy theme of Bloom stays consistent, evidenced by the rhythmic knocks of “Afire” that may remind some of a dragon’s rapidly approaching footsteps.
Years ago, ancient dragon Zenerith grew up and lived in an underground cave system in the massive continent of Arcord, peacefully with their family. Later when they grew older, Zenerith decided to emerge from the caves to find the world above.
They had heard of sunlight, but seeing it themself gave Zenerith life in a way they hadn’t felt before. This mixed with seeing a great amount of war amongst the denizens above gave heavy ambivalent feelings to Zenerith, and instead of journeying across this land, they decided to stay away from the fires there and instead flew to find solace in Islands of Mystery.
The final number is “Dive,” which brings the tempo back down to close out Bloom on a regal air. It ends the story (for now) with a dark yet triumphant energy, signaling the closing of one cycle and the beginning of a new one.
She’s taken the throne, her throne the whole time. She’s surrounded by scratched but shiny Gold. The one who followed me through all of the trials… The Guide.
It takes a considerable amount of effort to craft not only songs but also audio-visual elements and a matching story, and we certainly commend Dewpoint for his dedication to his work. For now, we are left to wonder–will the story continue with future releases? Will we get to learn more of the dragon, the Guide, and the fantastical realm featured in it? Only time will tell, but we are excited to find out.
