Following a handful of intriguing singles, Tourist‘s sophomore album Everyday is finally here.
Tourist is one of the most thoughtful producers around, expertly balancing intricate layering, airy minimalism and subtle surprises. The artist’s new album Everyday contemplates the beauty in everyday life with 10 warm and inquisitive tracks.
The London-based producer’s early album singles “Emily“, “Apollo“, and “Hearts” showed a refined touch for the rich timbres that comprised his 2016 breakout album U. While U‘s intense moments were angsty and experimental, the change of tone on the singles was clear, with Tourist (Will Phillips) explaining,
“I’m happy now, and much of this music is simply the result of me enjoying the creative process and exploring how sounds can make me feel.”-Tourist
The sentiment rings true over the course of the forty-two minute album, with Phillips drenching the tracks in uplifting splendor. The album is jam packed with creative touches and panned organic elements, making Everyday a solidly entertaining stereo adventure.
Everyday also features energetic and danceable drops on “Emily” and the playful midtempo track “Violet“. The illustrious cascading melodies on “Pieces” make for the most delightful sonic moments on the album. However, the album’s most mesmerizing track sits at the opposite end of the spectrum. “Apollo” is a masterpiece, building over the course of six minutes, with darker tones and an intense beat sitting between dreamy soundscapes.
Everyday is one of the more inventive electronic releases in quite a while, sitting somewhere between Jon Hopkins and Bonobo with its dispersed percussive elements and complex melodies.
