The transformative magic of a proper show lies not just in the strength of its lineup, but in the combination of music, production, sound, visuals, ambiance, art, and attendees that make this magic come to life complete: a transmutation of elements into the resplendent life-force of the present moment.
Living up to its namesake, it is just this combination of elements that the sonic sorcerers at Alchemy Productions aim to produce by bringing Resonant Language, Schmoop, DR01D Visuals, Funktion-One sound, and more to The Floridian Social in Saint Petersburg on September 21st to celebrate its three-year anniversary with a summer’s-end soirèe of interactive audiovisual gold.
“Looking back at the past 3 years, I am extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to share the music and art that we love so deeply and to build up this beautiful community together. I am so proud of this team and community for what we have built together. We have had the opportunity to work with hundreds of incredibly talented artists and creators of all shapes and sizes. It is truly an honor to continue to provide the space to celebrate the music and art that brings us all together. It is difficult for me to put into words what this project means to me and to speak on behalf of my team, but these intangible sentiments are reliably echoed by everyone who has participated in an Alchemy event over the years in one way or another.”-Josh Glogau, Co-Founder and CEO of Alchemy Productions
The Space
Located in the heart of Downtown Saint Petersburg, The Floridian Social’s rich history dates back to 1924. This elegant Art-Deco building, originally built as a bank, has since been modernized into an esteemed event space for gatherings, performance, and revelry. From its website: “The Floridian Social is more than just a venue; it is a cultural landmark that embodies the spirit of Saint Petersburg.”
This will be the third time Alchemy has hosted a show within these historical walls, and it will be the first time, thanks to Dosobis, that a Funktion-One sound system has been deployed therein. “Along with a full size LED wall, this show is bound to be a production never before seen inside this classic theater,” says Glogau. River Beats is thrilled to see this merging of past and present shed light on the Floridian future to come.
“We worked for years for the opportunity to throw events in what we consider to be the nicest indoor venue in Downtown St. Petersburg. As one of the oldest venues in St. Pete as well, it is a real honor to occupy this space and share the best of electronic music with our amazing community.” -Josh Glogau, Co-Founder and CEO of Alchemy Productions
The Players
Resonant Language
Fresh off a jaw-dropping penultimate slot for Tipper on Bangers Night at the Orion Theatre, Resonant Language is descending on St. Pete with his signature sound of crunchy, brain-splitting neuro. Creating intricate glitchscapes that mimic the mind’s maniacal oscillations under intense waves of emotional stimuli and revelatory insight, often inducing listeners to wonder if the singularity hasn’t already occurred, Resonant Language has been making serious moves in the experimental bass scene these last few years and garnering all the recognition his sound design deserves.
This past year saw the release of the inimitable Input Slope, premium slots at festivals like Submersion, The Rendezvous, and Sound Haven, and headlining shows in major cities like Atlanta, Denver, Detroit, and Philly. The next few months are already rife with upcoming dates: from headlining Autumn Revival to a set at Wakaan, and a headlining show in Denver with K.L.O. This stop at The Floridian Social is certain to be a fierce performance of 2024 as ResLang closes out summer with that fearless, innovative force for which he’s come to be known.
DR01D Visuals
In what is set to be, in my opinion, one of the most exciting pairings of the year, DR01D Visuals will be teaming up with Resonant Language to provide visual immersion to the headliner’s distinct soundscapes. Performing over the years with top players in the game, from Tipper and Detox Unit to Kursa and Mike Wallis, DR01D Visuals is a visionary artist who combines unique 3D renders with live audio-reactive software to plunge unsuspecting viewers into seamless worlds of identity dissolution at once touchingly familiar, phantasmagoric, foreboding, and futuristic.
DR01D’s style probes the realms of technological singularity as well, making it a perfect accompaniment to the music of Resonant Language, integrating science-fiction motifs with natural life-forms, dazzling geometry, and otherworldly color palettes to create a post-civilized world where biological organisms mingle and fraternize with humanoids, robotic entities, and fantastical beings of puzzling evolution. Aside from a Twitch stream in the time of coronavirus, this will be the first live pairing of the two artists, and we can’t wait to see the madness unfurl in St. Pete.
Schmoop
Notable for his banger EPs and acclaimed collaborations with Jade Cicada (including his work as one-half of beloved side-project Wonky Llama), Houston-based producer Schmoop has been a steady force in the experimental bass scene, spreading his signature sound of bzeows and wobbles to eager fans all over the US.
2023 saw the release of a masterfully crafted ID mini-mix of elegant tempo shifts, dubbed Schmoop Du Jour, and 2024 has seen the sound designer play prime slots at Infrasound and The Rendezvous, not to mention shows at Terminal West, Hampton Convention Center, Brickhouse Lounge, and Mission Ballroom, laying down that grease in the penultimate slot for Detox Unit. With visual support still to be announced, this set is bound to be a surprise bag of audiovisual splendor.
Opening Acts
Rising artists Relativity Lounge, MarkMcNulty, and Florida’s own Nidra are the opening acts for the night, setting the tone with an exciting variety of musical inclinations. This year, Relativity Lounge has been a creative force to be reckoned with, dropping two incredible EPs, caustic and zero-sum, in the last few months alone. Three years back, he played the first ever Alchemy Productions show, and the team is thrilled to have him back for their three-year anniversary celebration.
Brooklyn-based Mark McNulty is an eclectic DJ/producer with an ear for weaving a range of musical influences into buoyant rhythms that incite movement to captivated audiences on dance floors up and down the coast, and Nidra is a rising Floridian producer of soothing spacescapes and IDM whose full-length album, Places in the Mind, was released this year among a number of singles. Attendees will want to come early and stay late to ensure they catch each of these talented artists at work.
That Extra Flair
In addition to the music, this will also be the first time Alchemy hosts a full roster of painters and vendors inside The Floridian, featuring live painting from skilled visionary artists Violet Iris Art, Nick Synaptic, Khoury Affinity, Jesse Jones, and Sugarcube Lab.
If this wasn’t enough, a very limited number of merch featuring DR01D’s flyer art will also be available for sale, so make sure to get to the booth and grab a shirt to commemorate this special night before they sell out.
“Throughout 20 successful events over 3 years, our mission statement has and always will remain the same as when it was first written: Alchemy Production will host a variety of uniquely curated events focused on high fidelity sound and immersive audiovisual experiences. We will be showcasing talented electronic and visual artists from the underground and beyond, and we aim to curate a safe, creative space where anyone and everyone feels welcome to express themselves.” -Josh Glogau, Co-Founder and CEO of Alchemy Productions
With all these elements combined, gold is definitely in the air, so make sure to get there early to meet with friends, watch the artists at work, and spend some proper time at each artisan’s booth picking out your drip for the year ahead. With a lineup like this, you’ll want to savor all the time you can get on the floor.
As Paulo Coelho says in The Alchemist, “We are travelers on a cosmic journey, stardust, swirling and dancing in the eddies and whirlpools of infinity. Life is eternal. We have stopped for a moment to encounter each other, to meet, to love, to share. This is a precious moment. It is a little parenthesis in eternity.”
It is this unique power of connectivity in the present moment that Alchemy Productions has sought to achieve in the curation of their events. Come to The Floridian Social on September 21st to celebrate three years of Alchemy at their own parenthesis party in the exciting eternity of possibilities to come. You can find tickets here, and be sure to follow the links below to stay up to date on everything this team has in the works.
