Why do artists take time off from releasing music? To build hype? To charge their magical production crystals? Or is it simply to make sure their next release outshines the one before it?
In the case of the crystallized insect known as Jade Cicada, we are unsure of why he has waited two long years to drop his next track. The only thing we know for sure is that we have been highly anticipating this next release.
Living up to the hype, Jade Cicada’s latest single – a three-minute melodic journey titled “Frame Shift” – has delivered in full. Featuring his trademark sound design, never pressing down on the gas too much, and stitching together atmospheric builds alongside starry-eyed breaks, the track could perhaps indicate a more harmonically inclined direction to the project.
“This tune [Frame Shift] was heavily inspired by beat scene-type music of the early 2010s. Sunclef’s 2011 tune “Droski” is definitely the biggest influence in the direction of ‘Frame Shift’. I’ve been wanting to make music in that style but with a heavier bass/dance production to it for a long time and a goal of mine is to make more melodically and harmonically driven boom-bappy bangers like this one.”
Heading into the new year, Jade Cicada is also starring down the barrel of his first headlining tour in over 6 years. The renewed interest in going on a proper tour is just as mysterious as his reasons for releasing music again, but with the retirement of Tipper quickly looming, it appears the next torch-bearer is keen on stretching his legs.
Before the tour starts next month, Jade Cicada will be doing one final stop for the year in none other than Baltimore, Maryland. A massive cast that includes Resonant Language, crawdad sniper, Optik Sound, and Morphics alongside renowned VJs Tenorless, Glass Crane, Focal Point, Aabstract, and Planz Visuals are combining for which is undoubtedly the show of the year for the area as far as live bass music is concerned.
