Some of the best producers in the world are, by nature, inherently excellent performers. For a select few, this isn’t as much due to stage presence, mixing abilities, aura, or any other live theatrics as much as it is due to the exploratory and journey-like composition of their music.
One artist who fits this exact bill is Boston’s Entangled Mind, whom we have been covering emphatically for quite some time at River Beats Dance.

Today, we are thrilled to celebrate two massive milestones in the sonic career of Marissa Barbato: the recent release of their third EP, Illuminate, and their upcoming Denver headlining debut, taking place tomorrow, February 12th, at Cervantes’ Other Side.
The Music
With the arrival of Illuminate, we find Barbato at their most potent. While 2025 releases like “Hippo” may have set the tone for the EP, this project leans even deeper into the exotic storytelling they’re known for.
Released on Gravitas Recordings, the six tracks come together like chapters in an adventure novel, traversing foreign soundscapes brimming with global influences around every corner. The use of guitar, djembe, darbuka, jaw harp, bass guitar, handpan, and organic sound design teleports us from one end of the world to the next, all within a few measures.
While all of the tracks on Illuminate are special, I keep returning to the opening track “Brain Bath,” a soupy, psychedelic runway that feels as ominous as it does hopeful. The glittering synths, those hovering, haunting flute melodies, it’s goosebump-inducing work, and a masterful way to build tension at the start of a narrative.
It’s projects like this that make me want to see Barbato take a shot at scoring movies, as their sonic storytelling and ability to induce colorful imagery are impeccable.
The Show
If you’re as keen as I am to see what kind of effect this music has in a live setting, then make sure you’re in attendance at Cervantes’ Other Side tomorrow evening, Thursday, February 12th.

The last time The Rust label affiliate performed in Denver, they were opening up for Ott at Mission Ballroom in 2024.

This time, Barbato will be commanding the lineup, with their first headlining show in the bass capital of the world. With Dillard on as a special guest and Pailiaq and Quartzzion providing support, the night will be eclectic from start to finish.
