The 2018 Grammy’s have offically kicked off and what better way to start than with Kendrick Lamar slaying the opening scene.
The performance opened with dozens of soldiers in front of an American flag. Lamar recited his rhymes to “XXX.,” gradually growing more and more animated before U2‘s Bono and the Edge joined him onstage to perform their guitar and vocal parts.
The screen flashed “This is a satire by Kendrick Lamar” before Dave Chappelle appeared. Chappelle gave a brief dialogue, stating: “Hi, I’m Dave Chappelle, and I just wanted to remind the audience that the only thing more frightening than watching a black man be honest in America is being an honest black man in America. Sorry for the interruption.”
After Chappelle finished, Lamar transitioned into other verses from “DNA.” The performance ended with gunshots firing as the dancers fell to the ground.
