Chez and crawdad sniper Join Forces as Two Guys for Big Brain Goofin’ EP

Collaboration is one of the vital spices of human life. One of its many wonders is the potential it holds to unearth creations which, prior to confluence, neither artist knew they were capable of bringing into existence. In music, when forces meet on stage or behind the DAW, we are often treated to something unique. Creation begets creation, and the wheel spins on, carrying the world of music into exciting new territories.

It is in this spirit of collaboration, play, and discovery that two rising talents–Chez and crawdad sniper–have joined forces under the unassuming name Two Guys. On May 23rd, hot off their debut performance at Infrasound, the dynamic pair released their first EP, Big Brain Goofin’: four tracks certain to get your body jiving and jumping. Read on below to discover how this project came into being.

Not One, But Two

If you’ve been anywhere around the experimental bass scene these past years, there’s little need to introduce the two producers behind this project. Chez (the alias of Andrew Cariola) and crawdad sniper (aka Zac Kassay) have both been carving their names high in the ever-growing tree of electronic music with a Funktion-worthy blend of neuro halftime and funky breakbeats, and the people can’t seem to get enough.

This past year alone has seen both artists share the bill with heavy hitters like Tipper, Kursa, Resonant Language, Mickman, Jade Cicada, and more, not to mention headlining shows in cities around the country, festival slots at Infrasound, Big Dub, Untz, etc., and the sizzling “3 Of A Kind” tour with charles nimbus. On the studio side, last year also saw both Chez and crawdad sniper release glowing EPs on the inimitable Colony ProductionsThe Platter and Mellifluous, respectively.

Two Guys came about through the artists’ introduction by a mutual friend. The pair immediately hit it off and began diving into the DAW together, and the new project naturally came into being from there. Just prior to the release of this EP, Chez and crawdad sniper brought out their full artillery to Infrasound in early May, debuting the Two Guys sound on the Harmonic Stage. And this is only the beginning.

“The name Two Guys is intentionally simple and lighthearted. It reflects the idea that we’re just two friends making music—not trying to be anything more than that. It’s a reminder that having an artistic persona or making music that resonates with people doesn’t define your character—you still have to carry yourself with humility and integrity, just like anyone else.”-Andrew Cariola, aka Chez

The EP opens with “Two Rings (To Funk Them All),” a smooth-operator of bouncy rhythms, staircase beats, open bass notes, and warm key maneuvers, setting the tone with a proper dose of slinky, rippled funk.

The second track, “Barrel Roll,” is a stoop-swagger shoulder-swinger with clear nods to secret agent films of the ‘60s. Combining layers of laser synths with a light bongo patter and burly bass bumps, the producer’s weave their sound in and out of a warped sample of recent crowd-favorite: “Gorilla” by Little Simz.

With “Cease & Resist,” we’re driven straight into a realm of chonk and skitter. This track will have your gooseneck bobbing and your funk face cemented from beginning to end. While your feet might not know exactly what to do, you can bet they’ll be finding their own movement to the music beneath you.

“Po’ Bois,” the final track, is perhaps the most surprising of the four. Opening with a deceptively light vibe, the track quickly evolves into a series of bass slaps, scaly pullbacks, Bop It wiggles, and chopped hip-hop samples for a disorienting funk down that closes the EP with a clean, solid finish.

What’s Next

This EP is only the beginning for Two Guys. Speaking on the future of the project, Cariola said, “Our focus is simply on following what excites and inspires us. Lately, we’ve been leaning into a kind of funky, spy-inspired vibe, but we also have a lot of creative ideas for edits and experiments in the pipeline. We’re aiming to keep Two Guys shows special and intentionally limited, so each one feels like a unique experience with fresh content and energy.

If you’re trying to catch Two Guys doing their thing live, your next big chance will be this year’s Secret Dreams in July, where each artist is billed for solo sets as well.
