rSUN Unveils Multi-Genre Debut EP ‘Entropy’ via Memory Palace Records [Listen]

It’s very far and few in between that you find an artist who combines both depth and versatility nowadays. We oftentimes see artists get stuck in a box containing one genre or one style that they may be known for. This isn’t always a bad thing necessarily, but it’s also refreshing to the palette coming across artists like rSUN who continue to make whatever they artistically want to.

Carson Glover, better known as rSUN, is an up-and-coming producer from Richmond, Virginia. Though just starting to garner some serious traction, the rSUN project has been up and running for about seven years now. Throughout those years, Glover dipped his toes in a wide array of genres. Wave, house, future bass, dubstep, trap, you name it, he’s probably done it.

The Richmond-based producer has been making waves recently, with many coming to know him through the support of artists like Of The Trees and Zeds Dead. That doesn’t mean he isn’t familiar with the spotlight, though. rSUN has released on notable labels like Bassrush, Jadū Dala, and Hypnovision in the past and has also performed at festivals such as Moonrise, Big Dub, Nightmare, and Autumn Revival.

Until now, the multi-genre bending producer has only treated us to singles and remixes. This past Friday, however, he unveiled his debut EP and first major project, Entropy, released on Of The Trees’ imprint, Memory Palace Records.

“I haven’t released an EP before and I knew that when I did release one I wanted it to be some of my best work. I feel like Entropy has all my styles of bass music I’ve been making and it also feels like a new direction for my music. I’m just excited to finally be putting out a whole project that I feel best represents the sound I’ve been honing in on over the past couple of years.”– rSUN

Kicking off the EP is the track “Do That”. This one sets the tone of the project well and is a great example of how effective rSUN is in creating an atmosphere not only in his drops, but in his well-thought-out intros, breakdowns, and outros as well. It’s a slow and tense burn leading up to a drop that rewards you with a gritty bassline and head-bopping beat. Overall, this one felt like the perfect intro to the project.

Next off of Entropy, is the tune “Talk About”. The song that started this entire EP. There are not enough good things to say about this track. It checks quite a few boxes. Full sounding with a clean mixdown and an undeniable atmosphere created from the very beginning. An eerie and almost psydub-like vibe gently leads you into a rainforest filled with hard-hitting subs and infectious energy. The only choice you have here is to go deeper and get lost in this one.

Right at the center of the EP, we have “Soundkilla”. This track bleeds in a bit slow and with a bit less of an intricate intro than the previous two, but still succeeds in immersing you within its energy. Once the meat of the song comes in, “Soundkilla” becomes an in-your-face, energetic and hard-hitting tune with dubstep and trap flavors. I suspect this one will play nicely with proper sound systems.

Up next is “Flow”- a spacey journey through rSUN’s low-end grooves. This tune sets more of a relaxed vibe and carries you along smoothly throughout its sonic landscape. It maintains the same kind of grit as “Talk About”, but delivers a completely different experience.

The beautiful tune “Harmony” brings this incredible EP to a close. The lone single released off of Entropy starts out feeling like a satisfying ending to a wonderful experience and maintains that theme throughout. It begins on an incredibly gentle note and slowly leads into a delicate drop with the same signature sound we’ve come to love throughout this EP. This was the perfect choice to close out the project.

Seeing as though this was rSUN’s first shot at a lengthy project and major release, we’re impressed, to say the least. He’s a very capable and very talented producer who deserves all of the flowers he’s been getting and will be getting for this debut project. The world is in his hands right now and if he continues on this path, it doesn’t look like he’ll be going away anytime soon.

If you were lucky enough, then you may have been able to RSVP for his EP release party in Denver on release day. Otherwise, for anyone trying to catch rSUN, you have the opportunity to in just a couple of weeks in his hometown of Richmond, VA alongside VCTRE, Ooga, and Rex Whatever. Fans can also look forward to seeing him at ILLfest later this year.
