Nice to chat with you! Let’s dive into it. What first drew you to the minimal tech sound, and how has your connection to it evolved over the years?
It’s funny you mention how my connection to music has evolved. I still remember the days when I was blasting big room tracks and couldn’t stand house music. I never would’ve imagined minimal taking over my life the way it has. Being in Detroit, surrounded by so much musical history, opened my eyes to the underground scene, and from there, my fascination just kept growing.
For me, minimal is more than just music—it’s an experience. It’s not something you can fully appreciate in a car; the magic really comes alive in person. As for what drew me to minimal, there wasn’t a single defining moment. It was more of a slow-burn fascination that’s grown steadily over the years—and continues to this day.
What makes The Magic Stick Detroit the right stage for ISMOS’ debut event on Nov 27th?
Magic Stick has always been a cornerstone in my career, consistently giving me opportunities and trusting my intuition and bold ideas. Like anything in life, it’s the people along the way who make the difference, and the team at Magic Stick has been that for me. When I pitched the idea, the concept came to life within days. It’s rare to move that quickly, but Magic Stick has always been an exceptional business partner over the years.
What unique elements will Miss Belles, TekNoNo, and your own set bring to the debut event that highlight the ethos of ISMOS?
The ethos of ISMOS is all about stepping outside your comfort zone while staying true to your groove. Choosing TekNoNo was a no-brainer—he’s not just my best friend but my brother. We push each other every day, and I told him, “Create something that takes your performance beyond your comfort zone.”
That challenge became the foundation for his Hybrid Set. Do I fully know what it’s going to be? Not exactly. But I do know that TekNoNo is always ready to rise to the occasion. Miss Belles was one of many talented candidates we considered. Ultimately, it came down to the core question: “Does she know how to properly open a room?” Based on my experience with her, the answer is a definite yes. There are some things you can’t teach—like surviving marathon sets at Space Miami—but Miss Belles gets it. This will be her first set in the main room at Magic Stick, and that alone is a step outside her comfort zone. And that’s exactly what ISMOS is all about. 😊
What could artists look forward to if they got signed to the label?
A full 360 experience—that’s what I strive to deliver. I take pride in involving my artists in every aspect, from artwork and key distribution to crafting the story behind the music through marketing and promotion. In today’s world, music is only half the equation. The other half is creating a compelling narrative that makes people genuinely care about the art being presented.
Throughout my career, it’s always been disappointing when labels fail to communicate effectively or put real effort into promotion. It feels disingenuous like they don’t care about the music or the artist. Those experiences left a sour taste and made me hesitant to work with those labels again.
It’s simple: treat others how you want to be treated. At ISMOS, we foster a family experience—one built on mutual respect, collaboration, and genuine care for the art and the artist.
What led you to choose “Danner (US) – No Confies” as the debut for ISMOS?
I wanted the first impression of ISMOS to be artist-first rather than the impression of a personal imprint. I reached out to fellow artists, including some heavy hitters, with constant emails. Danner (US) didn’t hesitate—he was all in from the start. He sent me “NO CONFIES” as a reference track, and I immediately asked, “Bro, is this signed?” When he said no, the decision was made.
The rest is history. I played the track seven times in a row in my living room, already celebrating the future and everything that’s to come.
Where do you see ISMOS taking the minimal tech sound in the next few years?
I believe the path is highly adaptable. My strong intuition has guided me this far, and ISMOS will follow that same approach. You can expect expressions that push outside your comfort zone while keeping you inside your groove—that essence is unwavering. As for the rest, it will unfold naturally, in its own time.
Could we see ISMOS branching out into visual arts or other creative mediums to complement its music-focused vision?
Absolutely. ISMOS is more than just a music label—it’s a space for artistic expression in all its forms. As the saying goes, art is in the eye of the beholder, and inspiration can come from anywhere. With intentional steps and a bit of intuition, we’re shaping this journey piece by piece.
I’m beyond excited to continue bringing stories to life through ISMOS and can’t wait to share everything we’ve been working on. This is just the beginning!
How have your personal experiences in Detroit’s minimal scene helped shape and inspire the idea to create this label?
Being in a city that gave birth to dance music is a challenge in itself. Studying the history and artists like Kevin Saunderson, Juan Atkins, Jeff Mills, Derrick May, and Richie Hawtin helped me realize that ISMOS needed to take shape. Detroit was built by these pioneers, but the question is: what comes next? Who represents the next generation?
I want ISMOS to cultivate an essence that goes beyond the names on a flyer, creating a legacy that not only honors the history of Detroit but also leaves a lasting impact on dance music as a whole.
When you look back on your career so far, what moments stand out as defining or super unique?
Definitely the Detlef – Dub Clap remix was a turning point for me. It’s what truly propelled me into the world of minimal tech. It was so unexpected, yet it sparked my career and helped me fully appreciate minimal as a genre. Another key moment was witnessing Michael Bibi, PAWSA, and Dennis Cruz go back-to-back at Space Miami in 2022. That night was when I realized how integral minimal had become to my life.
More recently, I had the privilege of performing at the ARC Music Festival afterparty in Chicago. Growing up there, being back in the city, performing, and doing what I love was incredibly special. Having people who knew me from middle school dancing to my music was a priceless experience. And to have my mom there for the first time was emotional. She’s been such a huge part of introducing me to dance music—without Mama Ish, RN ISMO wouldn’t exist, and by extension, ISMOS wouldn’t either.
What is 2025 looking like for you?
80% of my efforts will be focused on the label moving forward. I’ll still work with other artists, and if a project comes along that feels right for another label, I’ll let it unfold naturally—but I’m not holding my breath on that.
Now that I have a label, the storytelling is in my hands. Whether it’s self-released, through other artists, or something entirely different, 2025 is shaping up to bring new opportunities and creative expressions. And don’t worry—RN ISMO unreleased IDs will be making their way out soon. Just a few though 😉
