sfam Talks the Creative Process, Influences, and Weird New Music [Exclusive Guest Mix]

Throwing down is no issue for sfam. Hell, they’re known for it. As one of the hottest electronic duos in the Gulf Coast, sfam has taken over with their unique trap style. The duo, made up of Michael Pearson and Jacob Hoerner, already has a steady following with fans drooling over their energetic sets and intricate originals. But there’s no stopping there. With the recent release of their original track “Inhale” and collab with JuLo on “Get It”, sfam’s trajectory is straight up.

We took a break to talk with Michael and Jacob of sfam to catch up ahead of their show opening for G Jones with Sayer at Republic on October 22.

You guys just put out new music recently with “Inhale” and a collab with JuLo, “Get It”, what’s in the works next?

M – “We have a release soon of our remix of Guess Who with our homie KTRL and that EP is coming out late November, after that we have a bunch of unreleased tracks that we’re gonna work on and get out.”

What is the creative process?

J – “Since both of us work  a lot with different schedules, If I’m working late night, I’ll go work on music and then Michael will come over when he gets off and will just join in and start working together or vice versa. If we both have some off days, we’ll get in the studio together. It’s been a lot of individual working parts right now and then coming together and bouncing ideas off of each other.”

M – “It works really well that way for us.”

How would you say you guys stand out among other DJ’s and duos?

M – “With our original production we just try to not sound like anyone else or do what everyone else is doing. In our sound design and in our style all together. In our track, Doom, the intro is chill and kind of hip-hoppy and then goes into a more minimal trap drop and a lot of our tracks, we try to be innovative and aim to create sound that we haven’t done before . With our sets, we like to find the weirdest tracks that we can find, either from our homies who have unreleased stuff or from wherever we can find it.”

What or who influences your music?

M – “Personally, I’m inspired by this producer named Sumthin Sumthin. Right now he’s my favorite producer. This guy from Los Angeles. He’s really grown his following in a just few months just from his releases.”

J – “I would say one of my favorite producers right now is Wuki. I like his break beat style. The bounce. And also throw in a little trap into it. That’s what I try to go toward when I am making music and that is what sets Michael and I apart and brings our style together to create sfam.”

M – “The weirdest music we can make together. Ever.”
