This past year has been such a treat for bass music fans both old and new. There has been an onslaught of amazing and fresh releases from established and emerging talents in bass music. One of those emerging talents is Mikayli, based out of Brooklyn, NY. Mikayli is the project of Michéle Failla, an experimental bass producer whose roots are in hip-hop production.

Failla is known to use different elements from multiple genres in his music. This is very evident in his latest EP release, Hypnotic. In this release, Mikayli incorporates styles such as UK garage, dubstep, and New York hip-hop. Using this blend of styles, Mikayli provides fans an EP that puts his talent on full display and demonstrates why this man is on the brink of becoming a household name in underground bass.

Track Analysis

The 5-track EP begins with the title track, “Hypnotic.” This track was the second single of the project released on April 16th and lays the groundwork for the EP with its eerie undertone and cutting basslines. Mikayli uses a tasteful mix of samples along with crisp percussions to create a track that sets the mood for what is sure to be a beautiful sonic journey.

The next song is titled “Tunnel Vision” which was the first single released from the EP on April 9th. This song is the perfect follow-up to the last and continues with the eerie undertone. Mikayli uses this track to showcase his impressive sound design while taking the listener on a ride and keeping them guessing at what comes next.

The next one off this EP is one of my favorites by Mikayli titled, “Mess.” This track starts with an intro that tastefully incorporates drums one may hear in a UK garage track. Mikayli blends these elements with the eerie violin we have heard throughout this EP and leads us into a signature drop that grooves and contorts. This track demonstrates masterful implementation of elements from styles across the spectrum.

The next track on the EP, “On Time,” continues to bring the energy up to pace. It begins with a sample that older bass fans may recognize which then threads through Mikayli’s rattling basslines and cutting sound design to create a track that is both nostalgic and fresh. Mikayli has shown across this entire EP that his sampling prowess carries some serious weight.

The fifth and final track of this EP is titled “Heat Seeker.” This one starts with a sample that sounds like a warning siren and a far-off bassline in the background. The bassline slowly creeps up on the listener and then drops into a melee that is guaranteed to make any bass fan smile. Mikayli does a good job of keeping the listener guessing and adds a change-up that is guaranteed to keep the listener engaged.

Aside from this recent release, the last year has been a very successful one for the young Brooklyn-based producer. Aside from the EP release, Mikayli also won the kLL sMTH mix contest and opened for him in Denver at Ogden Theatre with names like DMVU, Hypho, and Anna Morgan. Mikayli’s talent should not be slept on and I implore everyone to tune in to this immaculate body of work to get a taste of his talent.
