The Pacific Northwest is an often-neglected part of the country when it comes to electronic music, but a few dedicated producers are steadily improving the scene and bringing in fresh energy. One such producer, Hobi (Brendan Jones), is hard at work expanding the experimental bass offerings in Portland and the surrounding areas, and he’s got the skills to prove it.
With performances under his belt at notable events like Infrasound Equinox, Ohm on the Range, Lightning in a Bottle, and the Untz, Hobi is building a dedicated following that is slowly spreading nationwide. He has also shown up for the local community; in 2024, he completed a tour in Washington, Oregon, and California at Shady Rest Campground, Enigma Gathering, and other PNW-based events.
Since releasing his first multi-song project in 2021, Ceramics, Hobi has been rapidly releasing a growing collection of singles and EPs to build his discography. He gained notoriety in 2024 after releasing two viral tracks: “Bloom” with Ashez, and “Dyno,” which he created entirely on his own.
Now, Hobi is back with his first official EP of 2025, titled what i want. The project debuted on earth Hz, a label that has worked with a number of other underground producers including OZZTIN, Common Creation, and Dredlok.
The first track, “chopping wood,” kicks off the EP at a rapid-fire pace. It launches straight into a groove, using deep, grimy synthesizers with staccato drum beats that ebb and flow to build suspense at key moments before slowing down the pace for the next track.
Song two, “swrvn thru tha,” captures a similar vibe as the first number while expanding on it with subtle vocals. It has a dirty, mid-tempo energy that perfectly sets up the rest of the EP.
The title song, “what i want,” continues to build on the anticipation and rhythms established by the first two tracks. By layering breathy, chopped female vocals with a return to harder-hitting percussion, it quickly breezes through its three-minute runtime and kicks the tempo into high gear.
The final number, “necklisis,” is a collaboration between Hobi and Knetica. It’s the slowest song on the EP, taking deliberate time to build into the first drop. Knetica’s skills shine through its experimental elements, which add well-placed breaks and chops to keep the listener engaged.
Overall, what i want is an excellent foray into Hobi’s talents and honed producer abilities for first-time listeners. It’s clean, clear, and full of perfectly timed moments that showcase his ear for music and years of practice. Although he has no upcoming shows announced just yet, we highly recommend checking him out the next time he plays near you; Hobi is on a fast track to success, and it’s one ride you’ll want to hop on.
