The Gradient Perspective has been on a hot streak this year as they’ve worked to drop songs from a growing range of incredible artists. From their summer compilation album to their newest offering, a fresh two-track EP from CØNTRA and Saturna titled What I Can Do, it seems that this label — and the artists working with it — are completely dialed in.
Upon listening, it quickly becomes evident what these two producers can do when they join forces. Saturna, hailing from Vancouver, Canada, and CØNTRA from Denver, Colorado, recently paired up to create this exquisitely produced project. If you haven’t heard of these two yet, there’s no better time to check them out than now.
Fans of creators like Charlesthefirst and Of The Trees are sure to love the two new tracks, “What I Can Do” and “Evoke.” CØNTRA and Saturna have worked with other producers including ATTYA, Metric, and Phurn, showing off both their talent as individuals and their ability to craft excellence with others. With sets under their belts at festivals such as Shambhala and Lightning in a Bottle, it’s clear that both artists are going nowhere but up.
The first of the two songs, “What I Can Do,” is a darker, midtempo number with forest sounds and ethereal vocal samples woven throughout it. The lyrics are simple and repetitive but effective, adding to the music rather than detracting from it, allowing the deep, moody beat to shine through and take center stage.
Similar vibes continue in “Evoke,” which kicks things into heavier gear while playing with more worldly instrumentation. The drums and basslines are perfectly done, building and dropping at just the right times to keep things moving.
To catch them live, you can see CØNTRA opening for the infamous Zen Selekta at Denver’s Meow Wolf on November 15. Saturna recently performed with Koja Sound at Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom on October 10, but more shows are sure to come including a support play for ATTYA in PDX. We can’t recommend these events enough — the intimate settings, artful sets, and killer sound production will come together to make them both very special evenings.
