Growing up, Sum 41 was like my intro to the world of punk music. Singing about all things from high school memories to heartbreak, they held the anthems of my middle and high school years. I can honestly say I never thought I’d see the day Sum 41 would tour again after Deryck’s health complications, but after Warped Tour 2016 it was obvious they were making a comeback. I especially never thought I’d see the day Sum 41 tours with Pierce the Veil.
On a wonderful evening in New Orleans, the House of Blues was jam packed for what was probably the best rock concert I’ve ever seen. Emarosa and Chapel opened the event. It was the perfect fit. Emarosa, as always, had the crowd pumped up and ready to take on the rest of the night. Songs included “Say Hello to the Bad Guy” and of course “Cloud 9.”
It wasn’t long before the highly-anticipated Sum 41 took the stage. Half the crowd was mid to late twenties, half about 15 years old, but the 17-song setlist undoubtedly united fans of all ages. Songs off the newest release, 13 Voices, seemed to appeal more to the younger audience with hits such as “Fake My Own Death” and “Goddamn I’m Dead Again” but were all perfectly intertwined with the classics, and my favorites, “Underclass Hero” and “Pieces” amongst many others.
In a world where ‘emo’ is making a heavy comeback, I am certain that Sum 41 is about to pick back up and rise again to the top of the punk music scene. Make sure to check these guys out on one of their remaining tour dates, and stay updated by following their Facebook, Instagram and Twitter!
