Cascade Equinox is bringing an incredible lineup of artists to Redmond, OR, September 19-21, and to get you excited, we’re highlighting one of our favorites: Flamingosis.
Flamingosis is a New Jersey-raised and Brooklyn-based artist and producer creating great vibes alongside his music, and we talked to him about his new record, his plans for Cascade Equinox, and more. Check out the interview below, and grab tickets to Cascade Equinox here.
River Beats: You’ve been blessing the world with good vibes and funky beats for years now, but it wasn’t always on the big stage. What do you feel like was your breakout moment or song where people really started to pay attention to Flamingosis?
Flamingosis: Football Head was the one for me. I remember making that track when I was still living with my parents after graduating from college. Finished it in a few hours, really late at night, and uploaded it to Soundcloud right after. Maybe less than a week later, I had some friends from high school message me that they saw my track on the front page of Reddit, and it really blew up after that. People tell me that they still listen to that track and it’s their favorite tune 10 years later, and I’ll always be grateful for that.
RB: If people only know your official release, then they’re missing out on some excellent
Soundcloud mixes. What’s your favorite of your Mood Provider mixtapes?
F: Mood Provider 3 is probably my favorite one still, but I love all of them. They’re all so much
fun to make. If someone is reading this and isn’t aware, I’ve made a handful of mixtapes called “Mood Provider” since 2018. You can listen to all of them for free on YouTube and Soundcloud. We are currently on Volume 12, so it’s a huge collection of soulful, groovy beats. Providing the mood for your listening pleasure.
RB: Your new album Sunlight Daydream is a collaboration with Diastrata. You’re no stranger
to collabs, but how did this one come about, and what do you like (or dislike) about
creating an entire album with the same artist?
F: I have known the Diastrata dudes (Ian Gilley and Drew Birch) for a long time now. Met them back in 2016 in Fayetteville, Arkansas while I was on tour with Late Night Radio. Drew Birch plays guitar and Ian Gilley plays the keys and both are nasty at it. Also both incredibly talented at producing, not just playing instruments. They helped a lot with the early recordings on my last two albums Daymaker and Better Will Come. They were also a part of The Bodega Groove Collective live band where we toured around North America performing last year. It got to a point where we did so much touring and music together that we just said to each other “why don’t we make a collab album?” We recorded everything in Drew’s basement studio within a year, which is pretty fast considering it’s a full length project. It was a ton of fun to make since all 3 of us are homies and have a unique style to bring to the table when creating together. Drew is a monster with the multi-instrumentation and sound design, Ian goes crazy with the synth and piano melodies and hooks and then I was going in with the drum programming and arrangement.
RB: Speaking of collaborations, can we expect any special guests at your Cascade Equinox set?
I’m gonna see if I can convince my tour manager Spillz to dance with me on stage – Flamingosis
RB: You’re playing a lot of beautiful outdoor locations like Cascade Equinox this year. Are there any specific venues or parts of the country you absolutely love performing at? How do you approach a festival or amphitheater set differently than an indoor venue or club set?
F: The Pacific Northwest is awesome. Most of my shows sell out over there (especially in Portland, OR). Also the nature out there is beautiful. I usually play more hard hitting and upbeat stuff at Festivals and ampitheaters to get bigger crowds going. Indoor venue and clubs feel more intimate, so I feel like I can play more of my unreleased music and stuff I’m currently working on rather than tunes everyone already knows.
RB: Are you planning on hanging out and exploring Cascade Equinox outside of your set, and if so who are you most excited to see?
F: Definitely gonna hang out around the festival. Looking to see Troyboi, Chromeo and Big Gigantic!
RB: Lastly, I always have to bring pop music into it. If you had to choose between Lana Del Rey, Charli XCX, or Dua Lipa, who would you create a song with and why?
F: Probably Lana Del Rey because the music that has been sampled in her production has been a handful of soul music that is more in my wheelhouse when it comes to producing music myself.
RB: Thanks for your time! We’re super excited for the new music and the live shows. Anything else you want the people to know?
F: New album Sunlight Daydream with Diastrata will be out everywhere on Philos Records September 12. You can also head to flamingosis.com/live if you want to catch me on tour!
