In the global dance music circuit, few productions are as ubiquitous as Boiler Room.
The London-based broadcasting platform showcases live music shows in cities across the world. For each episode, Boiler Room invites an artist (or several artists) to play a full set. Usually, the artist is a DJ and the set lengths range anywhere from a fleeting 40 minutes to marathon sessions of 12 hours.
Perhaps the most famous Boiler Room episode, this set is a prime example of what the shows are all about – live mixing, a live audience, intimate setting, and some interesting plot lines unfolding in the background.
For fledgling DJs, the opportunity to play a in a Boiler Room episode can be a way to jump-start their popularity. For established DJs, playing a Boiler Room set can be yet another opportunity to put on a masterclass on the art of track mixing. Either way, the variety of artists and million-strong YouTube subscriber base show that Boiler Room has something to offer for all fans of dance music.
Not to mention – there’s something so very endearing about watching members of the crowd dance their hearts out or stand around awkwardly in the background. A Tumblr blog even features a plethora of GIFs featuring noteworthy scenes in Boiler Room lore.
This preamble is an attempt to contextualize how important this event is for cities like New Orleans.
The rumors are confirmed – Boiler Room is coming to New Orleans.
On the first weekend of March, Boiler Room have set their sights on this city for the very first time. This is a momentous occasion, as the broadcasting platform will capture a snapshot of the New Orleans electronic music scene in the midst of its rebirth.
As if to make up for all the missed opportunities, Boiler Room have announced shows for not one, or two, but three nights (scheduled on March 6-9th). The series will take place at Three Keys, a common venue for smaller, more intimate shows and dance parties located at Ace Hotel New Orleans.
You can RSVP for the events here. Invitations are given on a first-come, first serve basis so we highly recommend signing up at your earliest convenience.
Below, we break down each event by day and offer our hot takes on the lineups. As exciting and as momentous as this occasion is, we at River Beats can’t help but scratch our heads at some of the lineup choices.
Night 1 – March 6th
When: 8pm-12am CST
Lineup: Legacy of New Orleans Jazz (More detailed lineup TBA)
Until we have more detailed information on the lineup, we can’t say much in terms of hot takes. However, the choice to showcase a jazz group is a bit of a head-scratcher. Although New Orleans is world-famous for its jazz music, this departure from the norm of selecting DJs is unusual in the sense that it already highlights a genre of music that permeates the very identity of the city.
Night 2 – March 7th
When: 8pm-12am CST
Lineup: NOLA Bounce OG’s (More detailed lineup TBA)
This choice of genre makes a lot more sense in our eyes, as bounce music is unique to the city of New Orleans. In the spirit of Mardi Gras (which takes place only a week prior), audiences will certainly feel a lingering need for bounce.
The choice to feature Viberian Experience came as quite a surprise to River Beats. Their social media footprint is relatively small compared to many of the local New Orleans artists. Spearheaded by CEO Jnerio Jarel, this music and art collective aims to be a “global creative platform for emerging artists & innovators”. Guest mixes sometimes feature outside artists, such as one featuring pop music innovator Kimbra (embedded below).
Although many are unfamiliar with Viberian Experience, River Beats remains optimistic that like most other episodes of Boiler Room, this will turn out to be a high-quality production.
