Halloween season is upon us, and it’s the perfect time of year for spooky music with dark themes. Experimental bass, sploinky sounds, and hard-hitting midtempo drops just feel right in October, and the underground is delivering with plenty of music to match the vibe.
The latest offering comes from Maryland-based DJ and producer Austeria, who released her third EP on October 10th. Titled Into the Unknown, this three-track project is the next leg of a journey established by her first two EPs, Metamorphosis and catyclysm.
If you’re not already familiar with Austeria, you will be soon. To date, she has graced the stages at festivals including Electric Forest, Elements, Infrasound, and Lost Lands, and you can spot her opening up at GRiZMas in Detroit this December.

Since debuting in 2018, she has rapidly gained notoriety and climbed the ladder to establish herself among the ranks of artists like Rezz and Zen Selekta.
Now, she’s focused on building her discography with unique, well-produced projects that set her apart. The title track for the latest EP, “Into the Unknown,” does just that, taking off with a spoken word introduction written by Austeria. The poem focuses on themes central to witchcraft and spirituality, such as releasing trauma, accepting the balance of light and dark, and embracing your dark side. It’s grimy and heavy, perfect for anybody craving for spooky dubstep.
We then enter “Chasm,” which adds a twist to the established sinister musical elements and offers a short return to spoken word poetry at the halfway mark. It encourages listeners to “let go” of their fear of the unknown by instead choosing to explore it, diving deeper into the themes laid out by the first song.
Austeria wraps the EP with “Falling Further,” morphing into a more ethereal and dreamy vibe, representing the freedom that comes with overcoming anxiety. It maintains a heavy bass sound while incorporating grander drops, wordless vocals, and violin-esque strings for emotional weight.
Although Austeria has yet to release any full-length LPs, Into the Unknown feels like an excellent warm-up for a longer project. She is quickly learning how to tell a cohesive story over several songs, and her production quality speaks for itself. We highly recommend giving this EP a listen and catching one of her remaining tour dates — you won’t be disappointed.
