Ambient Pioneers Marconi Union Drop ‘Crystalline’ Ahead of New Album [Listen]

Making their debut on River Beats Dance today is the UK ambient powerhouse duo of Marconi Union. Who are releasing new music from their 12th studio album, yes, you heard me right, 12 albums.

Their new single just dropped, “Crystalline,” which is the third single off their new album The Fear of Never Landing, which lands June 6 via Just Music. It follows the dreamy vibes of “Eight Miles High Alone” and the calm flow of “Silence Is Gliding,” but this one adds a bit more lift and clarity to the whole journey the album’s taking us on.

The entire album runs 55 minutes as one long piece split into nine parts. It dives into what the band calls the mix of fear and freedom, and the beauty that comes from living in between.

“Crystalline” is one of the album’s standout singles. It feels both big, melodic, and euphoric at the same time. The band says the title came from the image of a frozen, untouched place, which fit the vibe of the music perfectly.

“The title encapsulated the idea of a pure, untouched, frozen environment, which sonically is what the music suggested to us.” – Marconi Union

This album is the culmination of two years of work, and honestly, there were times they weren’t sure it’d ever get finished, or if Marconi Union would even keep going. But a live scoring gig for the 1975 skate film Downhill Motion in Manchester brought everything back into focus and gave them the spark they needed.

Since starting in 2003, Marconi Union has been quietly changing the game in ambient and electronic music. Their 2011 track “Weightless,” which has been dubbed “the most relaxing song ever,” has racked up over 900 million streams, which is an incredible number in the new age of streaming.

This new album, ‘The Fear of Never Landing,” keeps their momentum going, with a fresh mix of atmosphere, movement, and emotional pull. If you are looking to see some live shows, and happen to live in the UK, you are in luck – with stops in London, Manchester, Edinburgh, and more.

Give the new single a listen below, and let us know what you think. And look for the new album out on June 6
