Pierce Fulton Talks His New Sound, New Music and Batman [Exclusive Interview]

It seems like versatility is the new buzz word in the electronic music world, and Pierce Fulton is definitely a shining example of this. Known for his original dance tracks like “No More” and “Kuaga (Lost Time)”, Fulton exposes his fans to a new side with his new project “Borrowed Lives”. The Borrowed Lives Ep is a four-track collection that embraces elements of indie rock with a dance fusion. For Borrowed Lives, Fulton completely switched things up as he wrote and sang his own lyrics, in addition to providing instrumental and production work on the track.

While the change is something Fulton hopes his audience can accept, this new direction is something that almost didn’t happen. While recording the EP, Pierce broke four ribs and punctured a lung in a rope swing accident while he was up in Canada. While this terrible injury would hinder most artists, Pierce took it as a sign for growth. In a recent interview with Billboard, Pierce states that because of his injury most of the EP was made from rough first takes, and since he was mostly bedridden, the rough takes allowed Pierce to not overthink Borrowed Lives.

“I’ve realized more and more that usually the first take of anything is most likely the best,”

We had the chance to catch up with Pierce Fulton during his visit to New Orleans for Zoolu 23 at the Metropolitan Nightclub. We chatted about his “new” sound, where be believes his music is going, and whether or not Batman is truly a superhero. (BTW He isn’t).

First off, Welcome to New Orleans!

“Thanks so much. Absolutely thrilled to be here”

SO YOU ARE IN NEW ORLEANS DURING MARDI GRAS, WERE YOU ABLE TO CATCH ANY PARADES WHILE YOU WERE HERE?

“Yeah, I was! We got here yesterday and decided to just start walking around. I’m not from here, so I don’t know Mardi Gras too well, but I get the general gist of it. As we started walking around, it got more and more hectic. We eventually ended up in the French Quarter, which is where all the crazy shit happens during Mardi Gras. It was wild, I think we walked around for about 4 hours. Such a cool place!”

BORROWED LIVES IS A COMPLETELY NEW SOUND FOR YOU. WHILE IT STILL HAS AN ELECTRONIC FEEL TO IT, IT’S NEW TO YOUR FANS ALIKE. WHAT LED TO YOU CHANGING YOUR SOUND?

“I grew up playing music. When I started playing electronic music, I stopped playing live. I got to a point where I felt like I was making the same song over and over again.”

HOW HAVE YOUR FANS REACTED TO BORROWED LIVES

“Some people were definitely thrown off by it but I think ultimately my fans really embraced the EP! Obviously some were bummed I didn’t make a follow up to Kuaga but it happens.

“It was a HUGE step for me, and a big risk.”

2017 SEEMS TO BE A BIG YEAR FOR YOU, WHAT ARE SOME OTHER PROJECTS YOU ARE WORKING ON CURRENTLY?

“I’m actually working on an album right now. This album is a meeting in the middle for me. It will showcase a range of what I’ve done in the past, to what I’m working on now. I don’t want to push away my older styles of music. I’d rather bridge the gap between the old and the new.”

WHEN CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE THIS ALBUM?

“It’ll definitely be a summer themed album. I don’t have a set date right now but it’ll start rolling out over the next couple of months!”

You have shown your abilities to play so many instruments. I think the next things fans want to know, is when can they see Pierce Fulton (Live)?

“Man, that’s the goal! With this new album, my goal is to transition into a live show.

“At first, the live show will just be me, but I totally envision adding some other people to the mix. I’ve been preparing for it for a while. Hopefully this summer or fall I can make it happen”

This one is just for fun, Do you Consider Batman a superhero?

“No, cause he doesn’t have powers. He is a rich dude with no powers. Hopefully, I don’t piss off all my batman loving fans with that one”
